Exciting Transformation at The PEAK: Stirling’s Health and Wellbeing Opportunities Set to Soar
Active Stirling, in proud partnership with Stirling Council, is delighted to share an exciting update on the groundbreaking redevelopment project at The PEAK leisure centre – a transformative investment that will deliver a new era of health, fitness, and wellbeing opportunities for the Stirling community.
Owned by Stirling Council and operated by Active Stirling, a charitable leisure trust dedicated to delivering sport and physical activity services across Stirlingshire, The PEAK has been at the heart of community life since it opened in 2009.
First announced in 2024, the redevelopment project will begin this August and will double the size of the current gym, alongside the creation of two large, purpose-built studios for group fitness. These enhancements will dramatically increase opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to lead active, connected, and healthy lives.
This is more than an expansion – it is a full transformation. The PEAK will evolve into an even more vibrant hub where people can come together to exercise, socialise, and prioritise their wellbeing. The new spaces will offer more classes, greater flexibility, and increased access for people to get involved in fitness, no matter their age, background, or ability.
Matt Bunnell, Interim Chief Executive of Active Stirling, said:
“The PEAK Redevelopment Project marks a bold and exciting new chapter for Stirling. We are creating a space that truly meets the needs of our growing community – a place where everyone can find opportunities to improve their health, connect with others, and feel part of something special.
Demand for our health and fitness facilities has never been higher, and this much-needed expansion will allow us to support even more people to be active, happy, and healthy. We fully appreciate that there will be temporary disruption for our valued sports hall users including sports clubs, sincerely thank them all in advance for their patience while the work is being carried out and we will assist in securing alternative venue accommodation during this period wherever possible.
Amidst challenging financial times for the public sector, The PEAK Redevelopment will facilitate an operating model that can sustain and over time augment the myriad life changing and barrier breaking sport, physical activity and inclusion work Active Stirling expertly delivers throughout Stirlingshire. We are incredibly proud to be delivering this transformational project with Stirling Council for the people of Stirling.”
Stirling Council Leader Councillor Gerry McGarvey said:
“This significant investment at The PEAK at a financially challenging time for local government underlines our ongoing commitment to change lives through sport and physical activity.
“These fantastic new facilities will enable Active Stirling to give people of all ages more opportunities to participate in a wide range of fitness activities at The PEAK and across our communities, improving health and wellbeing outcomes.
“We’re really excited by this transformation, which will give Active Stirling the agility to deliver world-class leisure services in the future and support the delivery of a refreshed strategy for Sport, Physical Activity and Healthy Living in Stirling.
“Regular updates will be provided during the works by Active Stirling and any disruption will be minimised as much as possible for users. We thank them in advance for their patience and understanding.”

Active Stirling to Expand Health and Fitness Facilities at The PEAK Stirling
Active Stirling is thrilled to announce an exciting expansion of our health and fitness facilities at The PEAK in Stirling, marking a significant milestone as we celebrate our 15th birthday. The redevelopment which was announced at the Stirling Council budget meeting on the 29 February animates our commitment to providing exceptional fitness experiences for our valued customers.
The PEAK, already renowned for its state-of-the-art facilities, including three fitness studios and a functional training studio, will now undergo a transformative redevelopment to better serve our growing community of members. The redevelopment which positively responds to regular customer feedback requesting enhanced health and fitness provision will see the addition of two new fitness studios and a substantial increase in the size of the gym, doubling its current capacity.
"We are excited to embark on this health and fitness redevelopment project as part of our ongoing mission to advance participation in sport, physical activity, health and wellbeing for the people of Stirling," said Matt Bunnell, Interim CEO at Active Stirling. "The increased space and updated facilities will allow us to offer an even wider range of fitness programs and experiences, catering to the diverse needs and preferences of our customers."
Active Stirling is collaborating closely with key partner and sole member Stirling Council to appoint a contractor and commence the necessary works for the expansion. This initiative underscores our dedication to working in partnership with the local community to deliver innovative and accessible fitness solutions.
Stirling Council leader, Cllr Chris Kane, said: “We’re delighted to support this latest programme of expansion and we know the new facilities will be well received by Stirling citizens, who are already benefitting from some of the best fitness provision in Scotland.
“Investment in wellbeing, including sport and leisure, is one of our key priorities as a Council and we want people to enjoy the benefits of leading physically active lives.
“The Peak membership is a much loved and growing community in its own right and is central to the health and wellbeing of so many people across the Stirling area, regardless of age.”
As we celebrate our 15th anniversary, the ambition is that this redevelopment will create the leading health and fitness facility in the country and serves as a special birthday surprise for our members and wider customer base, reflecting our gratitude for their continued support and loyalty over the years.
1. What is the PEAK redevelopment project?
Active Stirling has announced a redevelopment project at The PEAK in Stirling to expand and modernise its health and fitness facilities. This reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional fitness experiences for customers.
2. Why is the redevelopment taking place?
Demand for fitness services has grown, and the current facilities are operating at capacity. This investment will offer a larger, state-of-the-art gym, two new group fitness studios, and improved access to group fitness classes, equipment, and training options.
3. What will the redevelopment involve?
One-third of the current sports hall will be transformed into fitness spaces, more than doubling the size of the existing gym and adding two modern studios.
4. Why is the sports hall space being reduced?
Usage data shows the full 9-court hall is underused. A 6-court layout will still support core sporting activity while enabling the expansion of high-demand fitness services. Other internal options would have closed key areas permanently, and external redevelopment would have required costly planning and construction.
5. How will this affect existing sports hall bookings?
There may be a period during construction when the sports hall is unavailable. We understand this may impact clubs and organisations, and we’re working closely with affected groups to minimise disruption and explore support options.
6. Who is managing the project and construction?
Active Stirling is working with Stirling Council to appoint a contractor to deliver the project.
7. When will construction begin and how long will it last?
Construction is expected to begin in August 2025 and complete by March 2026. Exact dates will be shared once confirmed with the appointed contractor.
8. How is the redevelopment being funded?
The project will be funded through prudential borrowing, not through additional public funding.
9. How can I stay up to date with the project?
Visit Active Stirling’s website at the PEAK Redevelopment page, follow us on social media, or contact The PEAK directly. Updates will also be shared via newsletters and email communications.
