Generations Active Together (GAT) is an intergenerational project led by Active Stirling, in partnership with Generations Working Together and Stirling Council, and supported by the GOALD project run by the University of Stirling.
The programme brings together Senior Sports Leaders from secondary schools with older people residing in care homes across Stirling and its surrounding communities.
We aim to break down barriers and perceptions of teenagers and older people, promote leadership skills in pupils, and provide evidence-based physical activity to older people by bringing communities together.
GAT in action
At the start of each academic year, pupils receive training in school and learn about the importance of physical activity in older adults, they receive Dementia Friends Training from Alzheimer Scotland, have discussions about tackling Ageism and Stereotypes of older adults and learn about Care Home settings.
The pupils also receive training on suitable activities, including, falls prevention exercises to help residents stay active. They then work together in groups to plan an exercise session, which they then deliver to the residents in a care home. During their visit to the care home, pupils also get the chance to talk to the residents which helps both groups to maintain and develop social skills.
Pupils, care home residents, and care home staff, who take part have expressed experiencing the following benefits.
- Increased confidence
- Improved physical wellbeing
- A sense of happiness
- Better understanding of each generation
- Greater mental health and resilience
