Over 600 young runners from across Stirling gathered at Queen Victoria School on Wednesday 28 January for this year’s Stirling Schools Cross Country Championships.

Delivered by Active Stirling’s Active Schools team, pupils from 30 primary schools, seven secondary schools, Fairview and Queen Victoria School itself, took part making this one of the largest schools sport events in the area.

Primary and Secondary Pupils Take to the Course

The event opened with the Primary 6 and Primary 7 races, where excited young athletes tackled the challenging winter course with determination and great spirit. The momentum continued into the afternoon as secondary pupils from S1 to S6 competed in their respective categories, demonstrating impressive stamina and strong school pride throughout each race.

With twelve race categories in total, and separate events for boys and girls, runners had the opportunity to compete both individually and as part of a school team. Team results were calculated using the finishing positions of each school’s top three runners, adding a collaborative dynamic to the day.

Community Atmosphere and Support

Despite cold January conditions, the atmosphere across the day remained warm and supportive. Teachers, volunteers and Active Schools staff lined the course to encourage every runner, helping to create an environment where pupils felt motivated, confident and proud to represent their schools.

Stirling Council also praised the dedication and spirit shown by pupils across the day.

It was inspiring to see more than 600 young people from across Stirling turning out with such enthusiasm and determination, even in challenging winter conditions. Events like the Stirling Schools Cross Country Championships showcase sporting talent, resilience, teamwork and school pride. I want to congratulate every pupil who took part, along with the teachers, volunteers and organisers who made the day possible, for promoting healthy lifestyles, confidence and a lifelong love of sport across our communities.
