Stirling Primary Schools’ Commonwealth Team Games return for summer 2026

Primary school pupils across Stirling are being encouraged to get active this summer as the Stirling Primary Schools’ Team Games return for their fourth year — now with an exciting Commonwealth Games theme.

Delivered by Active Stirling’s Active Schools Team, the Team Games offer schools a flexible, inclusive way for pupils to take part in competitive physical activity without leaving their own school grounds.

The initiative was first developed during the Covid pandemic to help schools stay connected through sport, and it has continued to grow year on year, with nearly 100 teams taking part in previous editions.

Accessible, inclusive and school‑friendly

The Team Games are designed with accessibility in mind. All activities can be completed within school grounds using minimal equipment, making them suitable for PE lessons, extra‑curricular clubs and inter‑house competitions.

This year, eight team‑based challenges test a broad range of physical skills, including balance, agility, throwing and catching, endurance and coordination. Alongside physical development, the games place a strong focus on teamwork and participation.

Based on feedback from schools, a new mixed‑age category has been introduced for 2026. This allows schools to include pupils from different year groups and makes the games ideal for inclusive movement breaks and small‑group activities.

Supporting teachers and pupils

The games were officially launched at a recent in‑service training session, where 11 staff members from local primary schools took part in the activities and explored ways to incorporate them into the school day, including during break and lunchtime sessions.

The Stirling Primary School Team Games is an exciting concept that allows all pupils in Stirling to compete against teams from other schools, without the need to leave their own school. The games have been designed to challenge pupils across a range of physical skills while developing teamwork, and they also link to sports we’ll see at the Commonwealth Games during the Summer of Sport.
