Active Stirling is proud to mark a major milestone for community sport, celebrating 50 years of ClubSport Stirling.
Founded in 1976, ClubSport Stirling has been at the heart of local sport for five decades — supporting clubs, strengthening communities and creating opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to take part in sport. What began as one of Scotland’s first sports councils has grown into a strong and connected network representing clubs across the Stirling area.
Working in close partnership, Active Stirling and ClubSport Stirling continue to play an important role in supporting grassroots sport — helping clubs to develop, volunteers to thrive and communities to stay active.
The milestone was recognised at Active Stirling’s recent Volunteer Awards, where a special Scottish ClubSport Service award was presented to Derek Young in recognition of his outstanding contribution to sport.
Derek has dedicated over 30 years to curling, serving as a club President, volunteer coach, umpire and committee member at both local and national level. His leadership, commitment and passion have made a lasting impact on the sport across Stirling.
I am honoured to receive this award for service to curling. It is always nice to receive recognition for the work you do. This award nomination came about after the considerable work done in organising my clubs, Borestone and Stirling’s 275th anniversary celebrations. This recognition is as much for the other committee members as it is for me.
The celebrations also included a highlights film showcasing ClubSport Stirling’s journey over the past 50 years — from its early beginnings to the vibrant network it is today, shaped by the volunteers, clubs and partners who continue to drive sport forward locally.
Celebrating 50 years of ClubSport Stirling is a fantastic milestone and an opportunity to recognise the lasting impact it has had on sport across Stirling. Our partnership continues to support clubs and volunteers at the heart of our communities, and it’s fitting that we mark this moment by recognising individuals like Derek, whose dedication truly reflects the spirit of grassroots sport.
The Scottish ClubSport Service to Sport Award recognises those who make an extraordinary contribution to local sport, often working quietly behind the scenes to support their communities. Derek Young is a truly deserving recipient. For over 30 years, his dedication has made a lasting impact on curling in Stirling and beyond, helping to support and inspire generations within the sport. We also congratulate ClubSport Stirling on their 50th anniversary and the continued support they provide to clubs and volunteers across the area.
As ClubSport Stirling celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, Active Stirling looks forward to continuing its strong partnership — supporting the next generation of clubs, volunteers and participants across Stirling.
