Celebrating Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week with a Day of Empowerment and Activity!

Active Stirling proudly hosted its annual Active Girls Day on Wednesday 8 October at Stirling County Rugby Football Club, celebrating Scottish Women and Girls in Sport Week with a vibrant day of movement, motivation, and connection.

Over 90 female pupils from secondary schools across Stirling — including Balfron, Dunblane, Stirling, Bannockburn, Wallace, McLaren, and St Modan’s — came together to explore new ways to get active and build confidence through sport.

The event featured a wide range of sessions including Rugby, Pilates, Strength & Conditioning, Podcasting, and Q&A interviews, all designed to help girls discover activities that suit their interests and lifestyles.

Supported by Young Ambassadors and Fit For Girls Stirling Ambassadors, all united by a shared goal: to celebrate and empower young women through sport and physical activity. It was a day of celebration of empowerment, inclusion, and the joy of being active.

It was fantastic to see so many girls getting active, trying new sports, and connecting with inspiring female role models. Events like this remind us how powerful sport can be in shaping confidence and leadership for life. Our Fit For Girls Ambassadors were brilliant role models throughout the day — leading activities, interviewing athletes and coaches, and encouraging their peers to get involved. They really embodied what Active Girls Week is all about, confidence, leadership, and fun through sport.

The impact of the day was felt strongly by the pupils themselves, with many sharing how inspired they felt by the activities and role models involved.

Erin Nicol and Hazel Prince, Young Ambassadors from Stirling High School, said:

“It was great to see everyone getting involved in Active Girls Day. The speakers were really inspiring, and the variety of activities on offer made the whole day exciting and engaging.”

Students from McLaren High School also reflected positively on their experience:

“We had a brilliant time at Active Girls Day and would love to become Fit For Girls Ambassadors after seeing how confidently they ran the event. The rugby session was a highlight — it was fun and really cool that our group was named after Eva Donaldson, a former pupil who now plays rugby for Scotland.”

Stirling Council’s Lord Provost Elaine Watterson attended and shared messages of encouragement and support for the future of girls in sport.

I felt inspired and enthused at being part of this fantastic event and I’m sure these feelings were shared by the girls from our secondary schools in attendance. Not only did the girls have opportunities to take part in a variety of sports and activities, they also got to engage with some remarkable role models which will give them belief about what can be achieved through sport. “I’m proud that Stirling Council, Active Stirling and other local organisations are embracing this important campaign to encourage more women and girls to get active and the incredible benefits from doing so. No matter your age or ability, there will be something for you, whether you’re just starting out or taking your next step.

Lord Provost, Elaine Watterson

Alongside the activities, pupils had access to stalls offering resources and advice to help them stay active beyond the event.

Active Stirling continues to work in partnership with Stirling Council to increase visibility and opportunities for women and girls in sport — breaking down barriers and helping change lives through physical activity.
