Lane swimming is a great way to improve fitness, boost wellbeing, and enjoy some calm time in the water. To make sure everyone enjoys their swim, we kindly ask all swimmers to follow a few simple etiquette tips when using our lanes.
Before you get in
Choose the right lane
Take a moment to observe the lanes before entering. Pick the one that matches your swimming pace—usually fast, medium, or slow.
Wait your turn
Give swimmers space to complete their turn and push off. Dangle your legs in first to signal that you’re entering.
While you're swimming
Switch lanes if needed
If your pace doesn’t match those around you, feel free to move to a lane that suits you better.
Be mindful of space
Our pool is for everyone, so please be respectful of others’ abilities and allow plenty of space while swimming.
Leave a gap when pushing off
Avoid setting off right behind another swimmer—give them at least 5 metres. Similarly, try not to push off directly in front of a faster swimmer.
Follow the lane direction
Swim on one side going up the lane and the other side coming back, as indicated by signage. This helps keep everyone moving smoothly.
Take breaks considerately
If you're resting, move to the corner of the lane so others can turn and push off without interruption.
Overtaking and awareness
Let others pass
If someone behind you is swimming faster, allow them to pass at the end of the lane.
Be cautious when overtaking
Only overtake when it’s safe to do so. Keep an eye on oncoming swimmers and avoid causing collisions.
By following these lane etiquette tips, everyone gets a better, more enjoyable swim. If you’re ever unsure or need help, just ask a member of our team—we’re always happy to help.
