Volunteers step up for first full day of specialist Walk Leader training at Forthbank.
We were delighted to welcome eight of our dedicated Volunteer Walk Leaders to Forthbank on Wednesday 18 June for our first ever full day of specialist Walk Leader training—combining Dementia Friendly Walk Leader training with Strength & Balance training.
Led by Active Stirling’s Physical Activity and Inclusion Officers Laura Taylor and Vikki Galbraith, alongside Community Activation Officer Chris McKenna and Walking Volunteer Administrator Matt Tanner, the day was all about giving our brilliant volunteers the skills and confidence to make our walks even more inclusive and supportive.

Making every step count
The morning session focused on Dementia Friendly Walk Leader training—empowering our volunteers to better support people living with dementia and helping everyone feel welcome and included on our Health Walks.
In the afternoon, attention turned to Walking Scotland’s ‘Walk Your Way to Strength and Balance’ programme—a simple set of 14 exercises designed to build muscle strength, improve balance, and reduce the risk of falls. These exercises are now being added to our Health Walks, making them even more beneficial for older adults and those looking to maintain their independence and stay active.

First time delivering both courses in one day!
This marks the first time we’ve delivered both sessions in a single day. The training was made possible thanks to funding from Walking Scotland 2024 (formerly known as Paths For All), which also helped us provide a well-earned lunch—giving everyone a chance to relax, connect and share their experiences.
Both Laura and Matt are now accredited Walking Scotland Cascade Trainers, with Laura delivering Dementia training and Matt delivering both courses.
Hear from the team:
We couldn’t be more proud to deliver these sessions to our amazing volunteers. It’s so important that our walks are inclusive, and we want everyone—especially those living with dementia—to feel supported and able to take part. Adding Strength & Balance exercises is a fantastic way to help people stay active, mobile and independent for longer.
This training is all about giving our volunteers the tools they need to support their local communities. It’s great to know that the work we’re doing helps more people feel connected, confident, and well—one step at a time.
