We're delighted to share the success of two young brothers who have been part of our Learn to swim programme, and who are now competing at championship level.

Both brothers, Alex (age 14) and Nicky (10) Tinch, joined Active Stirling’s Learn to swim programme back in 2016. Alex swimming journey has been a remarkable success since joining Stirling Swim Club in January 2020, despite everything closing soon after due to Covid!

Following his completion of the Learn to swim programme, Alex has gained a place with the Development Squad at Stirling Swim. He has worked hard and now trains with the Junior Performance Squad six times a week.

During 2022, Alex has taken part in swimming competitions, the highlight being the Scottish National Age Group Championships and the Scottish Swimming Summer Meet. His most recent competition was the West District Age Group Short Course Meet where he picked up a bronze medal in the 14 year old 50 Free Style with a time of 26.96 and swam 59.94 in to 100m Free Style at the West District January Pentaqua this year picking up another bronze.

Working through the Learn to swim programme gave me the skills I needed to take my swimming journey to the next level.

Alex Tinch

Alex’s younger brother Nicky, who has also completed the Learn to swim programme, has joined Stirling Swimming Club and is now in their development squad. He too has begun competing and recently enjoyed success at the Central Swimming Championships with medal positions in all his races and awarded the Best Overall U10 Boy Swimmer.

Both Alex and Nicky recognise the positive impact the solid teaching they received through the Learn to swim programme has had on their recent successes in the pool. As a parent I would thoroughly recommend the programme to others as an excellent grounding into the competitive swimming arena.

It's fantastic to see that our Learn to swim programme has helped give Alex and Nicky the fundamental skills to progress with their swimming from when they first started with us at Active Stirling to now competing at club level. We hope to see more success from the boys this year.

Gary Mackintosh, Active Stirling’s Programme and Development Manager

Active Stirling’s Learn to swim programme follows Scottish Swimming’s National Framework for swimming in Scotland and is great for children to learn core swimming skills such as breathing, submerging, and moving in the water. Lessons start from as young as 6 months, with early year lessons for adults and babies, and pre school lessons for children age 3-15 years.
