Stroke Survivor Jake MacDonald Takes on a Monumental Challenge with Support from Active Stirling
An inspiring story of recovery, resilience, and community support
Jake MacDonald, a stroke survivor currently undergoing rehabilitation, has completed an incredible challenge — climbing the stairs of the iconic Wallace Monument in Stirling. This achievement marks a major milestone in Jake’s recovery journey and showcases the power of determination, professional care, and community support.
Jake’s Journey to Recovery
On 10 March 2024, Jake suffered a haemorrhagic stroke, a bleed on the brain that left him hospitalised for three weeks. After spending eight days in ICU, he contracted norovirus, which further complicated his recovery. Unable to eat or drink, Jake was placed on IV fluids and antibiotics. The stroke left him with significant weakness on his left side, making everyday tasks a challenge.
Despite these setbacks, Jake found strength in the care of the NHS physio teams at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert and the Bellfield Centre’s Wallace Suite in Stirling. It was through this support network that Jake was introduced to Active Stirling’s Active Living For Life programme — a referral-based initiative designed to support individuals living with a wide range of health conditions or inactive lifestyles.

Support from Active Stirling
Jake joined the programme in July 2024, and began working with Stewart Cairns, one of Active Stirling’s dedicated Exercise Referral Instructors. The programme provided Jake with tailored support, professional guidance, and access to specialised fitness classes at The PEAK, helping him rebuild strength, balance, and confidence.
The PEAK became my escape — not just from the physical pain, but from the emotional toll of losing my youngest brother to cancer while I was still in hospital. I focused on getting better, so my wife wouldn’t have to carry the burden. The team at Active Stirling helped me rebuild strength in my left side and gave me purpose.
A Monumental Challenge
In a heartfelt gesture of gratitude, Jake set himself a personal challenge: to climb the Wallace Monument stairs in September 2025. Not only did he complete the climb, but he did so with determination and speed — inspiring everyone around him.
Through sheer hard work and determination, Jake has made rapid improvements in his strength and balance since beginning his rehab journey. He challenged himself to climb the Wallace Monument and not only succeeded but is already thinking about his next challenge. He’s been such an inspiration — congratulations again Jake!
