As part of the Summer of Sport, Active Stirling’s Sport, Physical Activity and Inclusion Team has developed a programme of learning and development opportunities designed to help volunteers, coaches and leaders build their knowledge, develop their skills and feel more confident in their roles.
And every course in the programme is completely FREE to attend.
Whether you're new to coaching, an experienced club coach, a parent volunteer, young leader, student or member of school staff, there are opportunities to support you at different stages of your coaching journey.
What's on offer?
The programme includes a varied mix of practical workshops, training courses and sport-specific development opportunities, including:
- Introduction to Coaching Children – explore physical literacy, the FUNdamentals of Movement and practical ways to support children's physical, social, emotional and cognitive development.
- Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport Training (CWPS) – develop the knowledge and confidence to promote children's wellbeing and respond appropriately to concerns.
- Emergency First Aid – develop essential first aid knowledge and practical skills, including CPR, AED use, choking, bleeding and common injuries.
- FUNdamentals – practical games and activities that can be adapted for different sports, ages and abilities.
- Scottish Country Dancing – learn dances and activities that can be delivered in PE, lunchtime and after-school settings.
- P5 Fun in Athletics – support teachers and volunteers preparing pupils to take part in the P5 Indoor Fun in Athletics Festival.
- SportAbility CPD Sessions – including Autism Awareness and Managing Needs and Supporting Dysregulated Behaviour, helping coaches and volunteers develop their confidence in delivering inclusive sport and physical activity.
- Sport-specific CPD sessions – introductory workshops covering sports including Handball, Gaelic Football, Tennis, Soft Archery, Cricket and NFL Flag.
There are sessions taking place at venues across the Stirling Council area, including The PEAK, Forthbank Stadium, schools and community venues, as well as selected online sessions.
Develop your skills for FREE
The programme has been designed with volunteer coaches in mind, recognising that time, cost and other commitments can make it difficult to access learning and development opportunities.
By providing the courses free of charge, alongside sessions at a range of times and locations, the programme aims to make continuing professional development more accessible to those involved in sport and physical activity.
The sessions are practical and designed to provide ideas, knowledge and skills that participants can take away and apply within their own coaching, school or community settings.

Please check the individual course information for any pre-course requirements. For example, the Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport Training requires completion of a mandatory eLearning module before attending the face-to-face workshop, while participants must attend both sessions of the split Emergency First Aid course to achieve certification.
