Stirling community celebrates inclusive cycling at Bikes Without Barriers Open Day

We were delighted to welcome over 30 participants to our Bikes Without Barriers Open Day at Forthbank, where people of all ages and abilities came together to enjoy a day of inclusive cycling.

The event gave attendees the chance to try out our brand-new fleet of adapted bikes, designed to make cycling accessible for everyone. Special guests from Stirling Council and partner organisations joined us to celebrate the day and watch participants cycle around Stirling Sports Village.

Bikes Without Barriers is an inclusive cycling programme delivered by Active Stirling, in partnership with Forth Valley Disability Sport and Stirling Council. It’s designed to support adults and children living with a disability or facing barriers to taking part in sport.

Thanks to funding from Tayside and Central Scotland Transport Partnership (Tactran), and in partnership with Dundee Dragons Wheelchair Sports Club, Kinross Trishaws, Community Cycling Angus, and Angus Alive, we’ve added 10 new adapted bikes to our fleet—giving even more people the opportunity to experience the joy of cycling.

Dundee Dragons Wheelchair Sports Club are delighted to support the development of adaptive cycling across Tayside and Central regions. Partnership working will be absolutely vital for the success of all our programmes. Working with Bikes Without Barriers, Kinross Trishaws, Community Cycling Angus, Angus Alive, and Tactran will bring so many opportunities for people with disabilities to be included and enjoy cycling for years to come.

Our new bikes include the Van Raam Fun2Go side-by-side cycle, ideal for those who may not be able to cycle independently. This brings our total to three side-by-side bikes, allowing participants to cycle alongside a pilot in a safe and social way.

We’ve also added the Tomcat Thunderfly, a hand-propelled trike that’s perfect for individuals with disabilities or support needs. The funding has also helped us expand our fleet of trikes, offering a range of stable, easy-to-use options for both adults and children.

Through additional support from Forth Valley Disability Sport, we now offer a wheelchair loader bike, which allows a wheelchair to be securely loaded onto the front of the bike—giving participants the experience of cycling while a pilot steers.

The Open Day was a fantastic celebration of inclusion, community, and movement—and we’re so proud to continue building a programme that makes cycling accessible to everyone.
