About Active Stirling

Active Stirling is a sports and leisure charitable trust, based in Stirling and formed in 2006. Stirling Council was appointed as sole member of Active Stirling in 2018. We deliver sport, physical activity, health and wellbeing on behalf of Stirling Council and we're a key partner in delivering Stirling’s Sport, Physical Activity and Healthy Living Strategy for Stirling.

We're a leading operator of sport and physical activity and we manage The PEAK – a £27.3M indoor sports complex at Stirling Sports Village on behalf of Stirling Council, along with a range of other facilities and venues across the Stirling council area.

We have over 150 employees and welcome a million users every year. Active Stirling is the largest charitable sports and leisure provider in Stirling. Every penny we earn is reinvested back into the venues, programmes, activities and services we provide to Stirling communities.

As a charitable trust, we invest any surplus money back into services and Stirling communities. We firmly believe in the power of sport and physical activity to do social good.

At Active Stirling, we're driven by our charitable purposes of –
  • the advancement of public participation in sport, physical activity, health and wellbeing
  • the advancement of citizenship or community involvement
  • the provision of recreational facilities, or the organisation of recreational activities, with the object of improving the conditions of life for the person for whom the facilities or activities are primarily intended.

Our Company Registration number is 298585 and our Registered Charity Number is SC037632.

The Board is made up of the Chair and Trustees with the Active Stirling Senior Leadership Team in attendance. Trustees, based on their breadth of knowledge and experience, are responsible for helping set the strategy to deliver the charitable outcomes of the organisation, approving the plans and budgets for achieving them and monitoring performance against them. The Board is responsible for the financial health of the charity and for overseeing its affairs to ensure that its charitable status is maintained.

The Board has delegated responsibility for the daily management of Active Stirling to the Chief Executive, who is responsible for leading the Senior Leadership Team and for making and implementing strategic and operational decisions. The Board works through Board Meetings, sub groups and through ad hoc meetings when necessary.

Being a trustee is like a non-executive director of a company. As a trustee your role is to work alongside the Chief Executive and Senior Leadership Team and our other board trustees to oversee Active Stirling’s performance, ethics, finances and risks. You’ll help make sure we comply with all relevant law and that Active Stirling is well run, in good financial shape and most of all, that we are delivering our charitable objectives to the very best of our ability.

As a trustee on our board you won’t directly get involved in the day to day operations at Active Stirling (and we wouldn’t want you to), but instead support and challenge the team on strategy and major decision-making so we can deliver our activities effectively.

If you’ve met any of the team at Active Stirling, either professionally or personally, then you’ll have experienced first hand the enthusiasm and passion we have for what we do at Active Stirling. We thrive on being given the opportunity to make a difference to people’s lives through sport, physical activity and healthy living.

Playing your part on the board of trustees allows you to give something back to Stirling’s communities, through the power of sport and physical activity. It’s highly rewarding and indeed hugely satisfying to uncover so many empowering opportunities to get active and stay active that really can change lives.

Yes it is standard practice that trustees of a charitable board are not paid for anything, other than legitimate, agreed, out of pocket expenses.

As a Trustee Director, you’ll play an important part in governing Active Stirling, working alongside other trustees who also have a passion for what we do. You’ll serve on our board which oversees what we do as a charity.

We’d like you to make full use of your specific skills, knowledge, or experience to help the board in its decision making. You’ll work collaboratively with the other trustees, the Chief Executive and the Senior Leadership Team.

The Active Stirling board meet every three months.

Before each board meeting we’d expect you to read the papers well in advance and make notes of anything you’d like to discuss.

You’d ideally need to be familiar with charitable organisations and their governance. You’ll need to have a passion for sport, physical activity, health and wellbeing and understand the benefits these bring to both physical and mental health. We’d like you to have knowledge of the Stirling communities and if possible relevant industry or specific sport, physical activity and healthy living experience.

We’re particularly interested to hear from you if you have specific skills in:

  • HR and Organisational Development
  • Legal
  • Governance
  • Asset Management
  • Performance, Scrutiny and Review
  • Health and Social Care sector

As a trustee you’ll need to make sure the charity complies with its constitution, articles of association and relevant legal, regulatory and governance frameworks.

You’ll help provide leadership and assist with setting the overall direction and strategy of the charity.

You’ll help make sure that the charity’s governance is of the highest possible standard and help monitor the financial position, to ensure the charity operates within its means and that there are clear lines of accountability for financial management.

You’ll act as the guardian of our assets, both tangible and intangible, taking all due care over their security, deployment and proper application.

We’d like you to bring energy, challenge and rigour to our board and actively take part in debate and discussion, providing expertise, advice and opinion where appropriate.

You must fully meet the requirements of the Trustee Code of Conduct and safeguard the good name and value of Active Stirling.

Most trustee boards have a fixed term membership, eg three years with a limit on how many terms you can serve as a trustee. The terms of office are set out in our handbook.

It’s rare but not impossible for trustees to be held personally liable either to the charity for a financial loss caused by them acting improperly or to a third party. However, we expect you to take the role seriously. Charity law protects trustees who have acted honestly and reasonably. The charity also takes out relevant insurance to protect trustees where required.
