The Active Schools Team promote active travel in schools by encouraging children to walk or cycle to school where possible.
Active Travel fits nicely with the eco-schools initiative which also encourages more environmentally friendly ways to travel to school.
The Active Schools Team support the work of Schools Boards and the School Travel Co-ordinator who try and develop school travel plans for individual schools.
Walk to school weeks are a great way to introduce schools and children to Active Travel. In the past, schools have taken part in a variety of ways such as whole class/school walks, completing travel diaries and starting up park and stride schemes. Schools also have a supply of pedometers which can be used by children to find out if they manage to walk the recommended 10,000 steps per day. International walk to school week will take place in the month of October.
'Park and stride' schemes work in a similar way to the park and ride scheme used in the city centre of Stirling. It is ideal for parents and children who live outside a reasonable walking distance from the school. Parents who normally drive their children to school are encouraged to park in a designated area away from the school gate where children can walk the remainder of the journey to school. At the moment in the stirling area there are Park and Strides at the following schools: Fintry PS, St Mary's PS(Dunblane), St Ninans PS, Strathyre PS and Trossachs PS.
Aberfoyle PS, Balfron PS and Killearn PS also organise park and strides during walk to school weeks.
